GREAT job on the map Paul! This is definitely the best one I’ve seen yet.
Seeing it like this makes me want the train even more. Thank you for posting this — I can’t wait to ride the train!
I don’t want to sound unduly negative, but doesn’t this route tend to wander a little, and often through very rural areas?
Yes, it does wander a little. As a first step to building light rail for the Fraser Valley though, it makes a lot of sense, as the track and right-of-way already exists, the geography of the line is in walking distance of many commercial, educational and recreational facilities, and B.C. already owns the right to use the track for a passenger service.
A study done by UMA Engineering for the City of Surrey suggested a cost of $6 million/km to build community light rail on the Surrey/Cloverdale portion of the line. This cost would further decrease as you go eastward, with fewer stations and crossings in the rural areas.
Hard to avoid going through rural areas in the Fraser Valley!
In the future, sections of the route could be modified for on-street operation in Langley, Abbotsford, Chwk…. as well, additional lines could be built, to begin to form a comprehensive network for the entire Lower Mainland.
