The Canadian State (Zwei commnets – We do note have states in Canada, we have provinces!) of Alberta has unveiled a C$2bn (US$1.9bn) public transport plan to boost public transit systems in cities and towns to cut down greenhouse gases in the province.
Under the green transit incentives programme (GreenTRIP), the government has earmarked C$800m (US$775m) for Edmonton, C$800m (US$775m) for Calgary and C$400m (US$387m) for other municipalities.
The multiyear programme is expected to make public transport systems more accessible in cities, towns and municipalities.
It also aims to reduce the number of vehicles on roads, consequently reducing the carbon footprint

I’ve recently moved to Edmonton from BC in the past couple of months, and I have been fairly impressed with the proposed LRT plans. However, I are feeling that they are moving at a snail’s pace (the NAIT extension won’t be completed until 2014) and funding is still not entirely guaranteed for the West/Southeast and Northwest lines (although the goal is to have them in place in time for Expo 2017 which Edmonton’s hoping to host).
There are also concerns about the West alignment and the potential impacts for businesses along Stony Plain Road. Vancouver and Translink should pay close attention to what is happening here in Edmonton.
Although, I do have to point out that the map above shows incorrect route alignments. The correct route alignments can be found on the City of Edmonton’s website here: http://edmonton.ca/transportation/ets/future-lrt-projects.aspx.
