Enough Premier Eby – How many People Must Die From The NDP’s “Rubber on Asphalt Planning”?

It is enough; it is time politcans get serious about transit alternatives to Hwy.1

More traffic lanes means more traffic and more traffic means a higher probability of accidents and death.

No more excuses, no more of you government’s questionable adherence to the SkyTrain light-metro system.

There is a plan and it is called the Leewood Study. The Leewood Study shows that a Marpole to Chilliwack regional rail line is both feasible and desirable.

The cost for the 130 km line, connecting Marpole to Chilliwack via the still in operation former BC Electric Interurban Line?

Less than one half the cost of the current $5 billion, 16 km Expo line extension to Langley, which, according to TransLink, will carry fewer customers than the current Broadway B-Line bus.

As premier, you cannot escape this; you cannot hide from what must be done. The buck stops at the Premier’s desk. The blood of those who were killed are on your hands Premier Eby and you cannot escape your complete lack of interest.

BC Highway Patrol says a multi-vehicle crash in Chilliwack has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

All eastbound lanes on Highway 1 near No. 3 Road have been closed since approximately 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, when BCHP first responders reached the scene.

“Police can confirm that there are fatalities and multiple people injured,” said Corp. Melissa Jongema.

She tells 1130 NewsRadio that at least two people have died.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area until further notice.

The westbound left lane is also blocked and heavy delays can be expected in both directions.

Drivers can take Lougheed Highway through Mission as an alternate route.

There is no estimated time of reopening.

  1. Operating LRT on the BCER will link: Vancouver, Burnaby, New West, Delta, Surrey, Newton, Cloverdale, both Langleys, Abbotsford, Sardis, Huntingdon, Cultus Lake, Chilliwack, Rosedale and places in between.

Combining human scale infill on existing urban footprint, with new human scale tramtowns built South of Fraser, we will house over 1 million people in GAHP (guaranteed affordable housing in perpetuity):

950,000 souls in new Tramtowns — South of Fraser
65,000 souls in new Neighborhood infill — North of Fraser

    1. Streetcar|LRT rides from Granville Island to Marpole, on the Arbutus ROW. Parkland along the route is enhanced by adding Streetcars.

    2. Streetcar|LRT crosses the Fraser on the New Westminster Rail Bridge where government owns 30% trackage for LRT service.

    3. South of Fraser Streetcar|LRT links to fourteen major destinations, including universities and industrial job centers. Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) manager told me in a phone conversation that they would operate a free shuttle service to meet the LRT.

    4. However, the most important reason to build Streetcar|LRT from Vancovuer to Chilliwack is to build GAHP for over 1 million people.

VANCOUVER – CHILLIWACK LINE SUPPORTS GAHP FOR 1 MILLION:

    (a) 75 Tramtowns South of Fraser (16 stops*) = 950,000 population

    (b) 10 Neighborhoods North of Fraser (6 stops*) = 50,000 pop.

(*) 22 Express stops would be complimented by additional Local stops, one at each neighborhood and tramtown.

N.B. Most trips will not be Vancouver to Chilliwack.

To the average person, these numbers may seem baffling, daunting or even incomprehensible. Let’s take a closer look…

The numbers are generated using human scale urban design principles that can be simply explained. Human scale urbanism uses house types rather than apartments or towers.

    (c) Human scale urbanism builds low to medium densities, keeping inflationary pressures house prices down.

    (d) Each human scale HOUSE opens its own, individual front door directly on the street, courtyard, or village square. By following this principle houses put ‘Eyes on the Street’ making places safe for people.

    (e) All neighborhood infill and tramtown units are GAHP HOUSES, guaranteed affordable in perpetuity (that means forever). Contracts on title restrict resale prices to ‘purchase price + inflation.’

    (f) GAHP houses are all human scale urbanism. Elevators, corridors and exit stairs are not necessary, saving 15% of floor space and huge costs in materials, equipment and construction.

    (g) In sharp contrast, Premier Eby passed three bills on October 2023, granting as-of-right development for towers at 200, 400 and 800-meter distances from transit stops.

For those curious for the small print, here is how the population calculations were arrived at:

    Over 1 million population supported

South of Fraser — 950,000 in new Tramtowns
North of Fraser — 65,000 Neighborhood infill

    TRAMTOWNS — 1 million residents
2.5 people per unit (emphasis on family units) = 400,000 units required
    Human Scale Density (average) = 22 units/acre
Total land required = 18,181 acres
    Acres per Tramtown = 120 to 480 (240 average)
New Tramtowns required south of Fraser = 75
    Tramtown population (average) = 13,500
    Population in 75 tramtowns = 1,012,500

NEIGHBORHOOD INFILL — 65,000 new residents in 10 neighborhoods
Infill population in 1 neighborhood = ½ tramtown population
1 neighborhood = 5-times land area of average tramtown
Neighborhood infill = 2 units per acre
Neighborhood pedestrian shed (12 min walk) = 1,311 acres
Neighborhood infill (100% human scale) = 2,622 units
Neighborhood infill (population at 2.5 pers/unit) = 6,500 new residents
Total population supported in 10 neighborhood infill strategies = 65,000

The reason we need to build Streetcar|LRT is to reverse the Housing Crisis created by making the WRONG technology choice (the Skytrain).

    1. Skytrain is a People Mover technology (like Detroit’s) operating a loop with 4 branches serving just 6 destinations (compare to 15 destinations listed at the top for Streetcar|LRT).

    2. Consider that the Skytrain Loop measures just 8.5 miles (13.7 km) in diameter (Main Street to New West).

    3. Vancouver – Chilliwack service will operates over 87 miles (140 km).

    4. Streetcar|LRT has twice the passenger capacity of Skytrain.

    5. The Broadway tunnel cost 12-times more to build than LRT. Thus, an 8 km tunnel to UBC will buy 96 km of Streetcar LRT service.

    6. The Langley extension is estimated to cost 6-times more than LRT. Thus, 16 km of Langley Skytrain will buy another 96 km of Streetcar|LRT.

    7. Combined, 192 km of LRT service can be built for the same price as extending the Skytrain, including: (a) 140 km Vancouver-Chilliwack line; (b) 16 km UBC-Granville Island-Chinatown-Stanley Park line; (c) 4 km extension to the North Shore.

ITS TIME TO STOP THE INSANITY. Keep Skytrain operating AS IS in a core area LOOP in the center of the region. Build Streetcar|LRT for the right reasons—to provide GAHP for over 1 million!

  2. Major Hoople says:

By coincidence, we were planning a vacation to your pert of the world but our Reisebüro warned us that one should not drive in Vancouver because the driving habits are so bad.

With the forest fire situation, as well with international tensions, we have decided to travel in Quebec and your maritime provinces.

  3. zweisystem says:

An update, this accident which caused the death of a mother and son was caused by a ladder on the highway, which evidently fell off a small commercial truck. The ladder caused a high speed multi vehicle accident.
