Trams (streetcars) Happily Co-exist With Bicycles
On the radio a few days ago, there was some disparaging accusations about LRT (trams or streetcars) and bicycles. Evidently there are some at Vancouver’s city hall who think that cyclists will be killed or maimed by the score by streetcars or light rail operating on Broadway.
In less tram backward countries, such as the Netherlands, cyclist and trams happily co-exist and many tram routes through the city have adjacent bicycle lanes.
A picture is worth a thousand words, unless that is, you live in Vancouver.

Sadly far too many politicians (and people) are brainwashed by the SkyTrain lobby..
Really, tram lines present no difficulty for cyclists and if the COV is promoting cycling on Broadway, it is remiss, anyhow. Broadway is essentially a freeway used by buses and cars. I can’t for the life of me understand how cycling on Broadway is an issue. How much cycling occurs on Broadway, presently? Maybe the odd nut case rides his or her bike on Broadway, currently.
Cycling lanes run parallel to Broadway along West and East 10th Avenue and along West 8th Avenue and no one with half a brain rides a bike on Broadway. If the COV engineers bothered to look at their cycling maps, they might have figured that out rather than make silly remarks intended to send clueless individuals on an irrelevant tangent.
Trams are ideal for Broadway. If the COV engineers can’t figure out how to make the design of a tram line safe on Broadway, they can be replaced with smarter engineers who can.
